The role
As a Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will play a critical role within the business to help support the day-to-day operations of the Devonport site. You'll be liaising with both internal and external stakeholders to provide the necessary support.

Day-to-day, the department is responsible for the provision of high voltage electrical supplies across Devonport Royal Dockyard and the provision of shore supplies to both submarine and surface fleet.

  • Working with the department to manage and monitor an extensive distribution network consisting of control rooms, substations, transformers, frequency changers, high voltage diesel generators and the ancillary equipment.
  • Ensuring that essential systems/processes in the supply to nuclear submarines are monitored and operated by the department covering a variety of shift patterns.
  • Management of control rooms and plant houses which are the focal point for monitoring and controlling the high and low voltage systems and backup supplies associated with essential supplies for nuclear submarines.
  • To be able to safely undertake and control switching duties associated with routine operation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) plant and systems.
  • Management of the monitoring, operation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of plant and systems associated with High Voltage distribution and back-up systems.


This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard

Essential experience of the Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer

  • Knowledge of the schedules and procedures that control the safety of HV and LV switching operations.
  • Previous experience promoting the safe control of work on HV systems.
  • Proven Stakeholder interfacing skills.
  • Experience utilising MS Office Packages.

Qualifications for the Trainee Nuclear Control Engineer

  • ONC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering.

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
